if its in the news paper than it really is true,
and now we have the picture to prove it too!
grandma sally was nice enough to clip out the article in the local alamosa newspaper. it is pretty cool to see the words DR. Spencer Mortensen. in fact it has been an adjustment for spencer this past month as he has been seeing patients. he no longer introduces himself as 'Student Dr' Mortensen but just 'Dr Mortensen'. i'm sure it feels pretty good for him to say as well.
And just when you think all the hard work is over because he has graduated, residency comes in and makes you realize that nothing good is ever really easy.
here is a day in the life of a first year resident aka spencer, (just in case you wanted to know about the glorious life he leads, and why we miss him so much)
Monday: wake up 4am be at clinic by 4:30am for pre-rounds and case review.
6am pre-rounds with residents, 6:30-7 rounds with attending's
8-12 clinic see as many patients as you can so you can hopefully be on time to get lunch. meanwhile take call from the ER and do any consults that have arose, quickly return to the clinic to finish seeing scheduled patients. (there are always add-on's and ER consults so the day gets overbooked fast.)
12noon dictate, finish charting, oh and eat lunch, pee, and drink some water.
1-5 afternoon clinic, hopefully all the AM patients were seen, if not see them too, and do the same as the AM clinic.
6pm finish dictating, charting, finish all the attending's 'to do list' (mostly pre-op cases, med follow-ups scheduling, and do their dictating and charting, and round on their patients)
7pm hopefully home for a quick dinner and shower....because lets be honest what happens at the clinic/hospital is gross. put the twins to bed
8pm start clinical review and prepare tomorrows educational review, prepare rounds, and do any educational research that has been assigned.
11pm hopefully in bed because tomorrow you have to do the same thing, wake up at 4am. and if he is on call, then most likely at least 2-3nights of the week he will have to go in and do a consult. so sleep is rare but he gets it when he can.
...oh and saturdays and sundays are still busy as he has to round from 6-11 and do anything else, anything else!
spencer is really busy and doing a really good job. the best thing about residency is that spencer is liking what he is doing, for the most part. and i am proud of him and all the hats he juggles.
he is really really amazing at coming home after a 16hr day and still jumping back
in with the girls and being the best dad in the world. (he does a really good job of spending as much time with us as he can)
